Changes to Abiding Ministries

31-Jan-2019 to 31-Jan-2019 I want to share with you upcoming changes to Abiding Ministries.  The Synod Council annually reviews our Synodically Authorized Ministries and, at the January 19 meeting, acted to authorize Abiding Ministries only through May of this year.

I don’t want to diminish in any way the good work of caring for people in poverty that Abiding Ministries and Pastor Rotella have done in the Northside and now Allentown neighborhoods.  In fact, I truly celebrate the gifts for ministry among people living in poverty that Pastor Rotella and others working closely with her so clearly bring.  Even so, our Synod Council has found that the expectations and formal structure of a Synodically Authorized Ministry do not fit well or support the shape of ministry that Abiding Ministries has; consequently, the present alignment is not sustainable.  After several attempts to resolve this, and following a formal ministry review that included our Churchwide partners, the Synod Council took the action the end synodical authorization this May.

Our Synod’s commitment to the relief and support of people living in poverty and to community outreach remains unchanged, and I am eager to find sustainable ways to put this commitment into practice across our synod.  I have talked with Pastor Rotella about the Synod Council’s action, and have informed the Administrative Board of Abiding Ministries by letter, inviting them into conversation with me and the Synod Council about how the people in the Allentown neighborhood might continue to find the care and respect that Abiding Ministries provides.

Abiding Mission, a separately organized 501(c)(3), owns the building that houses Abiding Ministries, so the Synod Council cannot determine whether the building remains open for continued care or closes.  I will keep you informed as opportunities materialize, especially where your congregation can continue to offer support to our synod’s ministries of care and respect for people living in poverty.

Thank you for your partnership in the ministry we share.

With you in Christ,
Bishop Kurt F. Kusserow
