The Preaching Seminars and other events are presently taking the place of the Lay Training Program. Over the years the Lay Training Program equipped people for service in congregations and our social ministry organizations.
The Lay Training Program was especially designed for:
- Lay persons who want to grow in their faith
- Persons who desire to serve the synod in Aaron's Ministries
- Synodically Authorized Ministers
- Lay persons employed by congregations
This two year program was taught by college and seminary faculty as well as by pastors and laity who have additional training and expertise in particular areas of ministry.
There were ten Saturday events, each consisting of six hours. Some of the classes were six hours in length while others were three hours. To complete the Lay Training Program, a student had to complete 60 hours of study. Individual classes were either three or six hours in length.
All events were held at Christ's Lutheran Church in Murrysville.
The curriculum included a variety of subjects:
24 hours Bible
12 hours Catechism and Lutheran identity
12 hours Worship and Preaching
6 hours Church History
18 hours Spiritual Disciplines, Pastoral Care, and Leadership
Those who could not attend all sessions substituted up to 12 hours of independent study or other courses that were pre-approved by the Ministry Committee, such as attendance at the Lay School of Theology at Thiel College, seminary on-line courses, or other events sponsored by synod groups and ecumenical partners.
The cost of the entire program was $400, payable quarterly, annually, or at one time. Individual seminars for those who were not participating in the entire program were $65 per event. (Individual registrations could only be accepted if maximum registrations had not been received.)
A total of 60 hours was required to complete the entire training program.
