2024 Synod Assembly Notice & Lay Voter Formula

This is the official notice (S7.13) that the 2024 Synod Assembly of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will be held Friday, June 14, 2024-Saturday, June 15, 2024.  This year’s assembly will take place at PennWest University – California (Formerly Cal U). You will have the option of attending in person or online via ZOOM meetings.  The constitution of our congregations reminds us in *C.5.04. that “this congregation shall elect from among its voting members laypersons to serve as voting members of the Synod Assembly.”  It is our hope that every congregation will engage actively in the life of the synod through its participation in the Synod Assembly.  You will soon receive more information concerning registration from Holly Schmitt, Chairperson of the Synod Assembly Planning Committee.

By action of the Synod Council at its meeting on January 20, 2024, the following lay voter formula has been adopted for the 2024 Synod Assembly.

  1. That each congregation, irrespective of baptized membership, may elect two voting members.

  2. That an additional voting member be elected, based on baptized membership above 500 but below750, an additional two voting members be elected for those congregations with a baptized membership above 750 but below 1,000, and that an additional three voting members be elected for those congregations with a baptized membership above 1,000. And that each increment of 250 above 1,000 baptized members provide an additional voting member for the congregation to elect.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the number of voting members for your congregation.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. William A. Schaefer
