Social Message on Gun-Related Violence and Trauma

The development of an ELCA social message on gun violence is underway. Social messages are ELCA teaching documents that draw from existing social teaching but throw a fuller and sharper spotlight on a particular social issue. Our synod’s Pastor Angela Smith was involved in the writing of this message and we are grateful for her work on behalf of our Church.

A draft version of this social message is now available for your feedback.

Please take the time, alone or with a group, to study the message draft and share your affirmations, concerns, and suggestions via this survey form.

If you have any questions, comments, or need a printable version of the survey, please email draftsocialmessage@elca.org. Feedback is due by January 31, 2024. The draft will be revised in light of the public feedback and then considered for adoption by the ELCA Church Council in late March of 2024.

Together through daily observances, this resource calls us to work toward the prevention of gun violence as people of God who strive for justice and peace in all the world. It may be used for individual reflection, group Bible study, adult education sessions, and congregational daily devotions. Your journey is intended to start on June 16th, but this resource can be used at any time.
