Hunger Challenge for Lent
Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ ... And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ (Matthew 25:34-36, 40)
How we are taking care of "the least of these?"
This lent, let's focus on the problem of hunger.
Our synod Hunger Education and Advocacy Team (part of the Church in Society Committee) is challenging us to think more about the problem of hunger, how we contribute to it, and how we help to fight it. This is a Lenten discipline which includes elements of the traditional Lenten disciplines of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.
These can be done alongside of other hunger awareness or fundraising programs that you already engage in, such as the ELCA World Hunger 40 Days of Giving program.
The Challenge:
Each week during Lent, we will provide a new challenge and related information to reflect on several factors that contribute to the problem of hunger and actions we can take to help:
Week 1: Go Meatless
Week 2: Measure Food Waste
Week 3: Eat on a SNAP Budget
Week 4: Consider Planting a Garden
Week 5: Backpack Program
Print Bulletin Inserts
We're Church in Society Together:
As you participate in these challenges, please share your experiences by posting on our Facebook page (SWPA Synod Hunger Team) or emailing hunger@swpasynod.org. Use these forty days to walk more closely with Jesus as we walk with our hungry neighbors.
