Social Statement Task Force Nominations
Dear Pastors and Deacons,
The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
I have been asked to share the following announcement from Roger Willer with you. Rev. Dr. Roger Willer is the Director for Theological Ethics in the Office of the Presiding Bishop.
The ELCA is currently seeking nominations and applications for membership on the task force that will lead the development of a social statement on government, civic engagement, church and state and related matters. Authorized by the 2019 Churchwide Assembly, we hope to have a large pool of nominations to draw from including bishops, political scientists, public servants, teaching theologians, ethicists, pastors, deacons, biblical scholars and many other leaders who work or think about the varied aspects related to human government. Attached is both the editable pdf form for making nomination or application and a description of the commitments needed for the four-and-a-half-year process. The due date is March 13, 2020; the task force will begin work this fall.

I understand that we are on the threshold of Lent, and that your time and focus may be directed mainly to leading the Church into this holy season. Thank you for that most important work. As you have time and attention to give to Roger’s request, please think of our church’s work of preparing social statements as holy preparation for a future Churchwide Assembly to deliberate on matters very important to us and to the country in which we live and work. And please do share this invitation with anyone you believe could contribute to the effort.
Thank you for your ministry as part of this synod.
With you in Christ,
Kurt F. Kusserow, Bishop
